HI-TECH Software has provided this freeware HI-TECH PICC-Lite compiler as a tool for hobbyists and students, but the licence allows its use for commercial purposes as well. It is ideal as a teaching tool for an introduction into the 'C' language and embedded programing on a Microchip device. The selected processors were chosen for this compiler due to their popularity.
The HI-TECH C Compiler has been discontinued and is no longer supported. Some years ago Microchip purchased HI-TECH and has incorporated much of their technology into the new families of MPLAB XC Compilers. Older versions of MPLAB 8.xx do include the HI-TECH Compiler as part of the installation. There is also a HI-TECH software archive for the compiler.
The link to the HI-TECH archive is to provide backward compatibility for those projects that cannot be migrated and to give you time to migrate your systems over to the current MPLAB XC equivalent compilers. The HI-TECH C Compiler for PIC10/12/16 MCUs has essentially been replaced by the MPLAB XC8 compiler, which supports all the 8-bit PIC microcontrollers. You can download the latest MPLAB X IDE and XC8 compiler for free.
These are the files as supplied by Hitech Software. They'reself-extracting DOS EXE files, made with LHA, some of which contain .HUFcompressed files which can only be decoded on CP/M itself. It contains thecompiler binaries, documentation, plus complete standard library source.
Hitech Software was bought by Microchip in 2009, and all their non-PICcompilers were immediately removed from the Hitech website, but in 2018Microchip were persuaded to release an old binary of the Z80 DOS compilerunder a liberal license.
The heart of this development tool suite is the CCS intelligent code optimizing C compiler, which frees developers to concentrate on design functionality instead of having to become an MCU architecture expert. Maximize code reuse by easily porting from one MCU to another. Minimize lines of new code with CCS provided peripheral drivers, built-in functions and standard C operators. Built in libraries are specific to PIC MCU registers, allowing access to hardware features directly from C. 2ff7e9595c
